I say it "appears" to be there because as you know you can't see much down there. I can see oil grime at that spot but it's impossible to say that connection is to

1. Oil leaks. Oil leaks are one of the symptoms most commonly associated with a bad crankcase vent filter. The crankcase filter simply filters the blow by gases to make sure that they are clean before they are rerouted back into the vehicle’s intake manifold. Over time, the filter can get dirty and restrict the air flow, and therefore
BMW Intake Manifold Components (DISA, Vacuum, CCV, Etc) The intake manifold takes incoming air from the intake and distributes it to each cylinder. Over the years the manifolds have gotten more sophisticated and complex. Most of the additional work that it does is emissions-related - recirculating vapors back into the engine to be re-used. Hey! I have a problem with my bmw e46 320d. Its leaking oil everywhere, and i was wondering if all of this could be caused by a bad ccv valve. But im not sure how it works as well some people say ita there to relieve the pressure inside the crankcase caused by the blowby gasses during combustion process; however everybody keeps saying that to test the ccv valve you can open the engine oil

The CrankCase Ventilation valve is also known as CCV valve, PCV valve, or the oil separator. The CCV valve is found under the hood of your vehicle, and it is a fuel vapor recycler. The primary function of the crankcase ventilation valve is to recycle blow-by gases back to the crankcase to be reused, thereby preventing damage to your BMW’s engine.

3. On most vehicles, people install catch can setups IN PLACE of a pcv valve as a way to have a system more like bmw's ccv system. (Stronger vacuum, full flow). The oem ccv is basically a catch can with an automatic drain. It's just poorly executed.
So, if one were to buy all the parts new (with discounted BMW dealer prices and Pelican Parts on coils), required for a pre-09/2002 e46, this would be an $875 project: Coils ( 6 @ $38) = $228. Spark plug wiring harness $112. Metal valve cover $297. Top valve plastic "BMW" cover $140. VCG o-rings (11 @ $1.36) $15. Mine is necked down from 3/4 to 3/8 on the valve cover side, and 5/8 to 3/8 on the vacuum side. I have no issues. The valve cover is under vacuum, these engines are designed that way. An old, crusty valve cover gasket won't do when you make this mod. If the OP didn't use a PCV valve somewhere on the vacuum side I could see this as the cause as

DISA Valve Replacement Tips. BMW has installed DISA valves across a wide range of engines. The M50 family is notorious for having DISA valve problems. To make things even trickier, not all of these valves were made the same.

For your 320i, I believe the P/N for the valve is 11617501566. Tischer in US have them for about $46.10 US. $650-700 is a rip job. Part from BMW in Aus would be about $100 - $140 and if they are charging $100 an hour labor then they just quoted you 5 hours labor
There is a unique thread today on temporarily BYPASSING the CCV, for reasons that are up to the owner, but one of which can be to TEST whether the smoke or other symptoms are due to the CCV: > E39 (1997 - 2003) > PCV Crankcase Vent Valve Temporary Installations
After reading several theads on this forum I decided to investigate the CCV and associated system. I found a technical bulletin (Not BMW) suggesting that proper crankcase vacuum is a method to determine if the CCV is working. The bulletin states that the vacuum should read from 3 to 6 inches of water at idle.

It's literally two T-40 bolts and 15 minutes. And dangit, way to resurrect the dead 1. Rough Idle. One of the first symptoms that a faulty canister purge valve may produce is a rough idle. In this case, you will notice the car running inconsistently while stopped or driving at low speeds. If the canister purge valve fails and sticks open, it will create a vacuum leak that can affect the engine idle speed and quality. 9PUVza5.
