I've been reading about how the retarder is frequently used to save wear on the service brakes. Is there any kind of 'rule of thumb' about what speeds to use it at before switching to your service brakess? Also, where and what does the retarder control switch look like (button, lever, toggle switch, twist knob)?

Retarders are invaluable tools in ETS2 for maintaining control of our heavy trucks on downward slopes and at cruising speed. Here are tips on using them effectively: Activate retarder first before service brakes when slowing from high speed – this avoids sudden deceleration. It contains varieties of transmissions with retarder and without retarder. SOUNDS: Air brakes, engine sounds, reverse In Euro Truck Simulator 2 it’s easy to
There are two ways to operate a retarder - the way you have described where it turns on automatically, and manual use. You can define a key to use it when you want to slow down for traffic lights etc. The three settings are basically the amount of retardation. Mike (Kiwmike7) [ external image ] 2 posts • Page 1 of 1
Each of the trucks now has a choice of transmission, one without a retarder and one with a retarder. I've tried the retarder in-game and it's not really useful. It's too strong of an effect so it's hard to control and there really aren't enough big hills that you could actually use it on. I find that the motor brake (jake brake) is more useful.
Truck: Scania S. Engine: 770 hp. Ingame display: 66.0/100km. Distance Travelled: 239 km. Fuel Consumed: 159.3 L. Note: 3km distance from garage to job that may alter ingame display results a small bit. If my calculations are correct, fuel consumption is 66.5/100km which seems to be accurate enough. Check your settings for the retarder increase/decrease keys and hit the decrease key in-game for a few times. As far as I understand, this is a bug. If you press the apostrophe key, it should go away. The retarder is a part of certain transmission configurations. Compatible with Euro Truck Simulator 2 (1.47) version. When I used to play UK Truck Simulator, I used the outside view, because I actually wanted to see my truck, but found that control of my truck was pretty poor. Then when I switched to ETS2, I tried the in-cab view, and my handling improved massively, plus like Ryu, it gives a more immersive feeling.

The exhaust brake is generally activated during braking or manually by a separate control (generally a button on the floor). The retarder is a more powerful version that holds the engine back when desired speed is exceeded (on hills and the like). Retarders work against the engines pistons, forcing them to slow.

when to use retarder and when to use engine brake? In real life and in game. In the game all trucks can have both (if you choose), In real life I've also seen trucks with both options. WvAyga.
